Happy Primary Day!
With less than six hours left until the polls close, I hope that each of you has voted or will vote before the day is done. I’m not going to go on a rant about the candidates I voted for or try to change anyone’s mind, but no matter what happens, I really hope that all of you will get behind the Democratic ticket first thing tomorrow morning. A quick glance at the “Protecting Families” section of Bob McDonnell’s Issues page was enough to convince me that even if my chosen candidate doesn’t win today, I am ready to hang up a Deeds yard sign, slap on a McAuliffe bumper sticker, or grab a packet of Moran lit, because getting Democrats in the positions of Governor, Attorney General, and Lieutenant Governor is what matters most.
The first line under the main quote of McDonnell’s “Protecting Families” page reads, “Bob McDonnell is pro-life.” It goes on to talk about how he helped enact parental notification, a dangerous rule that puts young girls with anti-choice parents at risk of not being able to make decisions about their own bodies. Then, not surprisingly, he states that he believes marriage is between a man and a woman, and that he was a supporter of the Virginia marriage amendment. He has been backed by the Virginia Family Foundation (which isn’t as nice and cutesy as it sounds) and the Virginia Society for Human Life, an anti-choice organization.
I encourage you, if you’re not feeling that motivated to get out and campaign should your first-choice candidate not win today, to check out the Republican competition to remind you of what we’re up against. Let’s not allow our awesome successes of last year to be canceled out by victories for our opponents in the fall. Vote today, and stand behind the Democratic ticket tomorrow.
