The Richmond Times Dipatch's PolitiFact Virginia recently made clear that Gov. Bob McDonnell is costing the state money with his archaic political views. On Monday, June 27th, PolitiFact validated a claim made by NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia that "Virginia spends $400,000 on abstinence programs while losing $2.5 million in federal funds due to Gov. Bob McDonnell's 'political agenda.'"
While Governor Kaine had ended funding of abstinence-only education, his decision was reversed by McDonnell last year. PolitiFact breaks down their evaluation of NARAL's claim, giving economic justification to oppose McDonnell's support of abstinence only education:
- $400,000 spent was a close approximation, with $382,688 being matched in state funds, according to a spokesman for the governor, in order to participate in the Title V Abstinence Education Grant Program.
- The claim of $2.5 million lost is supported by an HHS announcement showing VA would have received $2,593,487 for comprehensive sex education, which does not require matching funds - not to mention the funds for 2012-2014 that VA will be ineligible to receive.
