This Is Our House
Virginia Young Democrats Release New Voter Outreach Plan In Six Targeted House Districts
Richmond, VA – August 29, 2013 – News Release –Today, the Virginia Young Democrats (VAYD) released their “Phoning For Our Future” program designed to support and elect six Democratic candidates in targeted House of Delegate races.
“For the first time in decades, the Virginia Young Democrats have committed to an extensive, yet targeted, plan to turn-out voters and support the election of Democrats to the House of Delegates,” said VAYD President, Gonzalo Aida (Richmond.) “This is our house and we are taking it back. For too long, it has been the garden where Republicans grow repressive legislation that makes Virginia the laughing stock of late night comedy shows – not anymore.”
The program is the brainchild of Political Director, Jarrod Nagurka (University of Virginia,) and Campaign Director, Charles Bright (Fairfax.)
“Young people across the Commonwealth and region will have an opportunity to directly affect the outcome of this election and ensure that we send more Democrats to Richmond,” said Nagurka. “The House of Delegates has introduced legislation that violates the basic tenets of sound medical science, educational practice and economics. We are tired of it and we are giving young people an opportunity to pick up the phone and change their future and the future of the Commonwealth.”
The program is designed to concentrate resources into districts most likely to elect Democrats with a higher voter turn out. The program will target six strong Democratic challengers that are likely to unseat incumbent Republicans.
US Air Force Veteran and businessman, John Bell, is running in the 87th district to unseat one term incumbent, David Ramadan. Both President Obama and Senator Kaine won the district with 56 percent of the vote and Del. Ramadan only won re-election with 51 percent of the vote in 2011.
Long-time political activist, Jennifer Boysko, is running in the 86th district against incumbent Tom Rust. Both President Obama and Senator Kaine won the district with more than sixty percent of the vote.
Businessman and William and Mary graduate, Monty Mason is running in the 93rd district located near the College in the Williamsburg area. The district was represented by a Democrat until 2011 and won by President Obama and Senator Kaine by more than 57 percent.
Young Democrat and fourth-generation public safety worker, Rob Farinholt, is running to unseat David Yancey in Newport News’ 94th district. President Obama and Senator Kaine won the district by more than 52 percent of the vote.
Another young Democrat, James Harder is running in the 12th district representing Virginia Tech and Radford Universities. The district was won by greater than 51 percent by President Obama and Senator Kaine; Harder’s grandmother once represented the district.
Finally, Danville Vice Mayor, Dr. Gary Miller, MD, is running in the 14th district. The 14th was won by President Obama and Senator Kaine. Dr. Miller’s campaign has already knocked more than 10,000 doors.
“We picked races with strong Democratic candidates and strong recent Democratic performance. Our calls will be part persuasion and part reminding people to vote in non-Presidential years,” said James Lewis (Alexandria,) VAYD’s spokesman and Public Affairs Director. “Additionally, strong voter turn-out in these districts will support the election of Terry McAuliffe and Senators Ralph Northam and Mark Herring at the top of the ticket.”
