California Supreme Court upholds Proposition 8

In a disappointing turn of events, the California Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8, a referendum banning same-sex marriage. What's puzzling is that they allowed the already issued marriage licenses to remain valid. What message does this send the average citizen? It's alright to have a same-sex marriage license as long as you were quick about it?
